Vietnam inland waterways


Vietnam inland waterways started the first day of working under the Waterways Transport Department in 1956. At that time, there were more than 5.000km of waterways inland and nearly 1000km of the sea.

For 60 years nearly of the development with many changes, Vietnam inland waterways strongly work now with all its potential.

There are nine systems of waterways and more than 60 national waterways at the moment to server transportation and freight.


Boat types in Vietnam


Relating to the means that serve the waterway transportation, it was started with the traditional boats in the country. Of course there was the diverse system of boats in Vietnam in the past. It divided into different types base on the specific features of each region. However to serve the tourists now by the waterway, you can find the main types of boats by waterways such as: wooden boats, canoes, fishing boats, hydrofoil, ferry, junk, speed boat, cruise and some means that serve the water sport like kayak, sailboat.

In the North of the country, in the beach cities such as Ha Long, Hai Phong you can find the wooden boats, fishing boats that serve you to transfer by waterway. You can find the junk and cruise for overnight on cruise in Ha Long Bay. Or you can find the canoe in Ninh Binh to carry you to visit Tam Coc – Bich Dong Caves.
In the Middle and South Central, you can find in the beach cities the means that carry you by waterway such as wooden boats, fishing boat, canoes and speed boats. Of course in the famous beach cities like Da Nang, Nha Trang, Quang Binh, Phan Rang and Phan Thiet, you can find the means that serve the water sport such as sailboat, canoe and speed boat.
In the South of the country, you can find the speed boat and hydrofoil and ferry such as in the river in Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau. And in the other cities and especially in Mekong Delta, you can find almost of the canoe and ferry and speed boat to carry passengers by the waterways.
